The city is located 11 kilometers northeast of the center of Athens and 2 kilometers south of Kifissia at an altitude of 230 meters. The municipality has an area of 12.938 km2. The built-up area of Maroussi is continuous with those of the neighboring suburbs Pefki, Kifisia, Vrilissia and Halandri. Within Maroussi lies the biggest forest in urban Athens, "Dasos Syngrou" (also "Alsos Syggrou"). The Athens Olympic Sports Complex, the largest sports complex in Greece, built for the 2004 Summer Olympics, is located in the southwestern part of the municipality.
The main thoroughfare is Kifisias Avenue, which connects Marousi with central Athens and the northern beltway Motorway 6. Marousi has 3 stations on Athens Metro Line 1, and two suburban (Proastiakos) commuter railway stations: Nerantziotissa station and Kifisias railway station. The Municipality of Maroussi gives citizens and visitors the opportunity to use freely The Municipality Transportation for their movements.
Since 1997, an information office has operated on Efterpis Square ( Amaroussion Metro Station) on a daily basis, from 08:00 to 22:00, which serves about 600 people a day.
Passengers can obtain tickets and time schedules from the information office and also a map of bus itineraries. In addition to information about public transport available in Amaroussion, the information office also provides various types of information to citizens concerning the activities in the Municipality.
The Maroussi Transportation began operating in December 1997 with the first line. After 10 years, it covers 93% of the city through six local bus lines and daily 18-hour service (from 5:45 to 23:45).
